The Akita is the largest of the Japanese Spitz-type breeds, named for Akita Prefecture, where it is thought to have originated. This breed is renowned for its fierce love, loyalty and obedience to its owner. Akitas come in four colors: Red Fawn, Sesame (Red Fawn with black tips), Brindle and White. All except white must have whitish hair on the sides of the muzzle, on the cheeks, the neck, chest, body and tail. The Pinto color is not accepted as a Japanese Akita color, only as an American Akita color. Some breeders in the US mix the original Japanese Akita with the heavier American type which is larger, shorter in fur and allows for more colors.

The Akita is a very affectionate, intelligent, fearless, docile breed. He makes an excellent family pet since they are clean and easy to housebreak. This breed is typically gentle with children but more so to their own family members rather than strangers. Akitas can be stubborn and require firm but loving obedience training. He lives to protect his family and spend time with you.
